Now more than ever, we see the importance of having a concrete BCP (business continuity plan) for organizations. The operations of companies worldwide have been disrupted because of the health crisis. Some companies with a robust BCP have survived and have taken part of their operations at home. Other companies who laughed at the subject matter were forced to halt all operations or go out of business altogether.

Practical Application

The analysis stage enumerates all possible threats to business operations. Examples would be hurricanes or typhoons, earthquakes, health crises, strikes, lockdown, terrorism, and others.

Next is to design solutions for each scenario whenever possible. Some threats can be summed up in groups, for example, earthquakes, floods, health crises, and lockdowns can all cause complete disruption of operations while arson can just shut down a part of operations. Wisely grouping threats together can help effectively design possible alternative solutions when they happen. Possible answers can be backing up services on the cloud, or having another production site on a different location. Part of solution design is to differentiate essential from non-essential business operations. If your resources can handle including non-essential business operations in your continuity process, the better, if not, focus on essential business operations. 

The next step is implementation, testing, and acceptance. If your solution design is to have another non-operating (backup) production site, test this backup facility, and make sure they can handle the new load when they are activated. If your solution design is to have a backup cloud service, make sure the backend information system can process all data when they come in. Accept when testing is successful. The last step is the review of plans and maintenance of infrastructures. This will make sure that when a crisis does happen, your plans are updated and your machinery ready.
